Upeksha
Swarnamali is a Sri Lankan model and television actress, perhaps best known
for her role on the television series ‘PABA’. She became popular by appearing
in the video of the song ‘Chanchala’. She became a member of the Sri Lanka Parliament
by the 2010 General Elections held on 8 April 2010 representing the United
National Party having obtained 81,350 preferential votes being the second from
Gampaha District UNP list.

In our country the politic is
done mainly on trial and error basis, there are many fools than this girl in
our parliament. So why don´t we give a chance to her. When we think positively
- she is good to represent our country and meet foreign delegates than our
ministers. Good luck to you young girl. Take all these comments are

well to comment on her as an
actress, yes she is good, ever since childhood she never missed a musical show
in Kuwait and she was a corridor dancer too, sudden changes had settled her in
lk, she was succeding in her career as a visual dancer and a teledrama actress,
but she had another sudden change by selecting the path of politics,. which she
shouldn´t have done, hope her mom will be there by guiding her.

parliment don´t think about your suitability of politics. I am sure you can

Dear Upeksha, I do have all my
political views against you. But I always encourage changes, (positive and
productive -in your case it seems both are missing). I am not much interested
in the interview you had with Dilka. She was up to the standard, felt bit sorry
for you when I sow the way wa you struggle. What I would like to tell you is
that you are not an idiot, but you were helpless, it is because your lack of
knowledge and preparation. I am sure even by now you must have realize the
situation and the difference in two fields. its not the end but the beginning,
you must spend some more time to learn about this field. If you are really
interested in helping people, you don´t have to learn about 13ht amendment but
must have the courage to tell the others the ways that you could help to
develop this country. i don´t have much time to spend over you, but hope you
will be able to understand what I mean. Wish you all the best! Do what ever

a waste becoming a candidate...don´t know anything about country´s issues. u
better take some lessons before coming for a TV interview. I think most of the
people in Gampaha eats grass cos they voted u. Even experienced Minister Karu
Jayasuriya got less votes than you. I think ppl thought the General election
such as Sirasa Super Star or and Derana Dancing Star. Don´t be such a waste

are an MP. Please spend time in the Parliament Library and go through the litreture
avaiable there. There is a very good collection. Read the Constitution, the
statutes, Ersking and May of Parliamentry procedure and practice, hansards (but
not those of the recent past. Build your self up. If you don´t do this, please
do not intend to learn, then please do not make your life misserable and
thereafter the lives of those who voted and ours.

The best character i saw u
acting is in “Maya Roo” The character of a naive girl in a schizophrenic boy´s
hallucination. That was done superb. But will give you some advice, 1. Have you
gone College? At least junior high school? If not take off and finish schooling
first. 2. Learn politics well after school, because politics is not getting
votes and getting elected to the parliament. Any fool can do it and you proved
in again 3. Don´t participate in Live shows where Lioness like Dilka gonna
interview you. You´d have watched last 25 episodes of 360 before you go at
least. 4. Stay silent and get a “intelligence commitee´ to advice you like Merv
did. Don´t utter a word without permission of them 5. Don´t change your visions
telling you trust SF second to life and then telling same about Ranil and then
soon it will be Sajith. 6. Those who brought you to the politics destroyed your
image, now it´s unrepairable. Try to build it up by educating yourself 7. Now
you´ve shown your ignorance and illiteracy to the whole world. No matter what
you become in the future that will be a huge scar in your career and life. 8.
Think a lot when you talk, one day even your children (given the fact that you
will teach them what you couldn´t learn) will criticize and look down on you if

YUP I just saw Dilka was too
soft on you on this program probably she might have realized that it is really
unfair to tease a baby girl like you. I have seen in many 360 programs where
chronic politicians attended, Dilka was very sharp & harsh but it was not
in your program - luckily-! Anyway ITN is sole responsible for doing the
campaign for you to be able to go to parliament ´cos if ITN didn´t remove you
from the “Paba”, the people will not talk about you!then the “NO paba in Paba
Tele” wont be a issue among the people, thus the people would have not talked
about you during the election period & you would not get this much of votes
what I believe as sympathetic votes due to discrimination you faced in the Paba
drama!

Dear Srilal, Agree with your argument and Upeksha is released from the charges had she mentioned to the candidates upfront during election campaign that she was a “Lemon” and that she has no qualities to be a parliamentarian. i.e. no political knowledge, no vision, no ability to face an interview, no ability to answer a question. If she has not done that during the election campaign, but attempted to sell herself to the public, she is guilty as charged for ripping off the voters’ confidence. Being the “Best of the Worst” does not automatically qualify her to the parliament. It is a pity that UNP was so bankrupt that they did not have any better candidate to contest for Gampaha, who is not a criminal! Well it is time you accept the reality and let Upeksha do what she does best, which is “acting”.

You cannot become clean now by giving the lame excuses i.e.“I never knew lacking knowledge was such a crime” because you never told upfront to your voters that “I am dumber than you think, I have no knowledge in politics, I don’t know what I do or what I talk, I have no political vision or mission” so that they would have made a more informed decision and voted some one else more suitable to the parliament. I don’t think that you repaired your damage already caused with the previous 360 interview, by trying to do it differently in English language this time. Your answers were boring and lacked any substance. You could have handled it better by telling the people about what you are doing now to improve your knowledge. All what you have been doing was to be defensive and trying to put the blame on the public which is ridiculous. You don’t have to take all the blame yourself, but you can always share the blame with the idiotic voters of Gampaha district who voted you to the parliament!

It is true that there may be less knowledgeable people in parliament, but there are two factors in your attitude that disturbs me (1) The way you take the others as an example to hide your inability. (2) The way you play down the importance of knowledge in serving people. Let me tel you! please upeksha what you did not have a clue about was not rocket science, Those are facts any 7 th grader knows, any citizen knows. That is why you got to be ashamed of yourself. It was pathetic the way you answered some questions with the help of notes. It was like calvin ( cartoon series calvin and hobbes) calling his father and asking what 4+3 is ! That is why it looked so funy. The fact that you thought that you could just go to parliament without the basic knowledge shows how ignorant you are about this country. (3) The way you pretend that you do not speak the sinhala language or do not understand it, shows your ignorance . THIS OF COURSE IS NOT A CRIME ,true. Dear jayantha and aww, it is true that there are many unsuitable people belongs to the categories you described are in the parliament. But does it mean another unsuitable person should also have right to become a MP? Just because some people are involved in robbery do we also have right to do so? To become a really good MP both personal character and the knowledge/experience in th field are important. So it is the responsibility of people to send really suitable people in to the parliment. Anyway I should agree with you in the sense of that we should shout against the other unsuitable people that you mentioned, not only just for this woman.

Talking about having a good heart I wonder do you have one? If it wasn´t PABA you are just a another civilian to Sri Lanka and wouldn´t be in the Paliament today. Did you ever think about saying thank you to producer, Director and the whole other crew involved in PABA for giving such and opportunity to become so popular in SL? I think you owe a big thank to ITN too for telecasting the drama. Instead of saying thank you you critisize them is it right? When you spends 1000s of rupees in night clubs what did you for Gampaha poor women and children last six months, did you spend a one 1000 rupees for one hungry kid? I just want to know if you did I am grateful to you. Before you critize other fellow parliament members for drug dealings and other illleagal activities do you have proof to prove them? Don´t critize anyone based on hearsay that is also good habit to improve. I know you don´t like current government? But look at the president does he ever critize or accuse any person in public?

To be fair by both girls,and the DERANA TV, We have to admit that , the talented (and adequately matured)young journalist Dilka tried to the best of her ability , to deliver justice to the novice parliamentarian Upeksha and to the viewers. Well done Dilka! Naturally, we cannot expect a very young main actress in a TV MEGA serial appearing before us every day in TV, to possess a deep knowledge about current politics of this complexity. Does her ignorance of 13A makes her unsuitable to represent us in parliament? In the current complex scenario, the answer should be a big "YES". Unfortunately however, even the two most matured politicians of our country havebeen dodging the question of suitability of 13A for over 13 years. If Dilka could ask about the 13 A in her 360 from MR and RW ,WE KNOW for certain that they will play all kinds of summersaults to evade a direct answer.After so many forums, round tables, APCs, summits taking years,eating into billions of public money, the big guys are still wondering around the square one! Atlest Upehsha admitted that she knew little about it. I think Upeksha´s ignorance and modesty makes her most suitable to represent us. That is an excuse for today. Be courageous, confident and go ahead Upeksha, People are ready to postpone the judgement/verdict about you for ten years.

Have other popular persons (specially from the ruling party - like Anarkali , Sanath...etc ) who entered into pollitics from defferent fields being interviewed by 360 ? 2. has Dilka asked questions like 17th ammendment from them? Are these questions came originally from Dilka or any other person? 3. Does Dilka or any other person in media knows A to Z ( Everything ) in Media ? If most of the answers for these questions is "NO" only thing I can say is not only pollitics even the media in Sri Lanka is only a Muppet Show. First of all i must say i am from wattala(Gampaha district)i did not vote for Upeksha. I watched this whole interview and i did not see any mistake made in her english. I dont know who is this idiot who made a comment in this page saying she dont know english and sinhala properly.She proved that she is good in her english in this interview. And i wonder if she didnt know sinhala in which language did she act in paba.This is nothing but jealousy. I watched the said 360 Program which was conducted by adaderana in June where Upeksha had admitted that she does not have knowledge on certain elements such as 13 amendment to the constitution. This is great that she admitted and she said that she should learn more. I am of the view that as she is a new comer to the parliament as an actress. So we can not expect from constitutional affairs from her. even Garment working girl has a right to enter the parliament. therefore Upeksha´s version is correct .she has lot to learn However the way Dilka Saman Mali conducted the pro gramme is doubtful . I noticed that Dilka wanted to put Upeksha in trouble even though Upeksha admitted the inability. I have watched several 360 PG ms conducted by Dilka Samanmalie.( Mervin silva, Dayasiri J, Namal rajapaksha) how ever non of the said persons were cross examined by Dilka S on constitutional matters as she did in Upeksha´s programe. I saw she did not ask anything about 17 or 13 amendments from Dr Mervin Silva. So why dilka wants to Upeksha to speak about constitutional matters??? even though the person had already admitted that she must learn more on the subject. that should be appreciated. anyway I must thank "Derana" to telecast this type of useful programe
