Yugadanavi power station restored at 200MW

July 25, 2012   05:30 pm

The Kerawalapitiya Yagadhanavi power station has been restored at 200MW capacity while the remaining 100MW will be added on July 30, the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) stated.

Due to a technical fault the Kerawalapitiya dual power plant was generating only 170 MW, though it used to add as much as 270 MW to the Power Grid.

However this morning it was able to increase the power generated via the two gas turbines to 200 MW, which was immediately added to the National Power Grid, chief officer of the plant, M.J.M.N. Marikkar said.

Meanwhile the cause for the breakdown at the Lakvijaya Coal Power Plant in Norochcholai has been identified as a 5-inch tear in one of the thousands of tubes in the boiler economizer.

Local teams are currently working to rectify the issue and restore functions at the power plant, the Power and Energy Ministry said.

Power generation operations at the plant was temporarily suspended on Sunday following a technical fault. Power and Energy Minister Champika Ranawaka meanwhile had engaged in inspection tour of the power plant this morning.

Three teams comprising local technicians and engineers were assigned to study the situation and find a solution to breakdown. They had discovered the 5-inch tear in one of tubes in the boiler economizer, causing water carried through the tubes to leak.
