Customs officers today seized a container of potatoes imported from Pakistan after discovering 30,000 vials of a drug, used during abortions, concealed within the shipment.

A Pakistani national who is suspected to have imported the medicinal drugs, which is said to be worth around Rs 30 million, has been arrested, Director of Customs Mali Piyasena said.

The discovery was made by officers of the Customs Revenue Monitoring Unit upon inspecting a container listed as containing potatoes.

A total of three containers of potatoes were inspected since last Monday while 15 bags filled with vials of the drug, prohibited from being imported to the country, were discovered inside one of the containers searched today.

However, the main suspect responsible for bringing down the banned drugs has not been arrested yet while only the Pakistani national who had aided in the operation has been nabbed.

Sri Lanka Customs has notified Immigration and Emigration officials to assist in apprehending the main suspect.
