The National Freedom Front (NFF) today stated that it does not approve of the decision by the government to invite the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem Pillay to Sri Lanka, on a fact-finding mission.
The party’s media spokesman Mohammed Muzammil stated that the government expects Navi Pillay to come and be impressed by the development achieved in the country and speak favorably towards Sri Lanka regarding allegations of human rights violations.
He claimed that UN human rights chief has arrived in the country to fulfill the agenda of the Tamil Diaspora, who is seeking revenge for the defeat of the LTTE.
International organizations such as the United Nations are crucial for the existence of this world, however numerous problems have presently surfaced regarding the independence of these organizations, he added.
“Especially during the attack on Libya and Iraq, the United Nations was unable to do anything. When the leader of a state was brutally murdered on the road, the United Nations was unable to do anything,” he told reporters in Colombo.
He claimed that the only one third of funds are allocated for the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from the UN budget and that the rest is received from countries such as US, Norway and Canada.
Therefore the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is not at all independent, he alleged.
Muzammil stated that both the OHCHR and UNHRC were mum when the armies of powerful nations such as US, France and UK carried out human rights violations against hundreds of thousands of people in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq.
