Former UPFA member of the Southern Provincial Council Ananda Padmasiri Kariyawasam today obtained membership in the United National Party (UNP), during a ceremony at the Opposition Leader’s Office in Colombo.

The former Provincial Councilor was also appointed as the party’s Organiser for the Baddegama Electorate.

Only the United National Party can save this country from the abyss it has fallen into, Kariyawasam told reports at the event.

He stated that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) no longer exists in teh full meaning of the word and that the once great party is today identified as only the President and a few around him.

The former UPFA Provincial Councilor further said that those who had criticized Mahinda Rajapaksa in the past are closest to him today and that those who had worked hard for the party have been pushed aside.

Kariyawasam alleged that back in the day only the party’s General Secretary had the power to give SLFP nominations while today the Secretary is only for namesake.

Nowadays party nominations can be obtained in one night by meeting the President, he accused.
