Extreme weather conditions hit up-county, landslide warning for five districts

As the prevailing bad weather condition is expected to continue with in next 24-hours, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) has issued landslide warning for Galle, Matara, Kegalle, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts.
Dr. H.A.G. Jayatissa, Senior Scientist at the Landslide Research and Risk Management Division says that the public living in the said regions need to give special attention on all mountain areas, manmade cut slopes, and roads within the districts.
Assistant Director of the Disaster Management Centre, Pradeep Kodippili said that the Hatton-Nuwara Eliya Road, which was blocked near Nanuoya area in Bangalahatha due to an earth slip, has been resorted from this morning.
He added that over 100 persons have been displaced due to extreme weather conditions in Nuwara Eliya district.
According to the Met. Department, under the influence of Inter Tropical Convergence Zone, showers with lightning activities will continue for another few days, during afternoon and evening.
The department says that showers or thundershowers will be fairly widespread over the island, while heavy falls (more than 100mm) are also likely at some places in the Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern and Uva provinces.
The Dep. advises the general public to take adequate precautions to minimize the damages caused by lightning activities.
