Blast kills two boys in Palai...
April 26, 2012
Two Sri Lankan boys died when playing with an unexploded mine in the country’s former war zone. The two brothers, aged four and two, were killed when an object with which they were playing exploded in Pallai in the northern Jaffna peninsula on Wednesday evening, military spokesman Ruvan Wanigasuriya said. “It appears the children were playing with an unexploded anti-personnel mine,” he said. “It is very unfortunate and tragic that this happened despite mine education programs in the area.” Five children were wounded earlier this year in a similar accident in the neighbouring district of Kilinochchi, but there were no deaths, Wanigasuriya said. Wednesday’s blast in Pallai marked the first fatalities from unexploded mines, he said.
