All Islam devotees in Sri Lanka celebrated the Eid-ul-Fitr festival on Sunday (24).

Owing to the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, this year all Muslim devotees had to limit the celebrations to their homeplaces.

They celebrated the festival while adhering to quarantine curfew regulations and social distancing practices.

Eid-ul-Fitr is a “festival of breaking the fast” and marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. It is a religious holiday that is celebrated by Muslims from all over the world and involves a range of celebrations as friends, family and the entire Muslim community comes together.

The festival is celebrated on the first day of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic lunar calendar. The date and time of Eid differ in various countries, depending upon the sighting of the crescent moon.

In Sri Lanka, the crescent for the month of Shawwal was sighted on Saturday (23) and thereby, the Ramadan fast came to an end on that day.
