The Colombo Magistrates’ Court today rejected the bail appeal of Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) Convenor Udul Premaratna who had been arrested and remanded for forcibly entering the Ministry of Higher Education premises and damaging government property.
The attorney speaking on behalf of Udul Premaratna expressed to court that he (Udul) was scheduled to attend the meeting of the World Youth University Organization held in Johannesburg, South Africa on November 28th.
Therefore the lawyers requested that the suspect be released on bail as this was a special circumstance. The police however objected to the request stating that investigations on the incident are still ongoing.
Taking in to consideration all the information put forward the Colombo Chief Magistrate Rashmi Singappuli rejected the bail appeal stating that the said affair cannot be considered as a special circumstance and therefore ordered that Udul Premaratna be further remanded until 26 November.
Subsequently the 21 university students who were released on bail recently were also present at court today. They too were ordered by the Magistrate to be present at court on 26 November.
