Former Army Chief Sarath Fonseka was admitted to the prison hospital at Welikada last night, Commissioner General of Prisons Major General V.R. De Silva told Ada Derana. Doctors had confirmed that Fonseka was suffering from an illness, De Silva added.

Fonseka was attending court Tuesday on two separate cases - the Supreme Court over his appeal to retain his parliamentary seat and the High Court trial over the ‘white flag case’ where he is charged with making a statement that Tamil Tiger rebels who wanted to surrender were killed.

He is under a 30-month jail sentence with hard labor having been convicted by a court martial.
