JVP Parliamentarian Sunil Handunnetti says that he denounces the decision taken by the government to deport a Lebanese couple from the country today, under the charges of participating in an anti-government protest.
The Lebanese national is the Chairman of the Democratic Youth Union of Lebanon and also Lebanon’s representative to the World Federation of Democratic Youth, Handunnetti pointed out.
The couple had visited Sri Lanka as their first trip after getting married recently. They had come as acquaintances and not for any political agenda, he said.
The Parliamentarian emphasized that the couple had participated in the protest, held recently against the attack on him (Sunil Handunnetti) at Jaffna, only on an observation level and as international friends.
In a global perpective this act by the government can be described as asking for it ‘Illagena ke wedak’, Mr. Handunnetti said speaking to Ada Derana.
The Lebanese national is scheduled to participate in the 17th World Festival of Youth and Students to be held in South Africa from December 13th to 20th, where they will encounter the group of representatives from the Sri Lanka government, he added.
