A ten year old child in Mankulam, Vavuniya has passed away at 6.45pm yesterday while being rushed to the Settikulam Hospital. The boy had allegedly committed suicide after his mother strictly advised him to study.

The deceased, a grade 4 student of the Mankulam Al-Hamiya Muslim M.V, had rushed to a living room in the house after being firmly told to go study. He had then proceeded to wrap a saree/shawl hanging in the house (used as a cot for babies) around his neck, in order to commit suicide.

Upon detection the child had immediately been rushed to the Mankulam Hospital. However as his health was critical, was later taken to the Settikulam Hospital. Sadly the child was pronounced dead when admitted to the hospital.

It has also been stated that the mother had returned after serving abroad just a few days before the incident took place.

The body has been handed over to the Vavuniya Hospital for a postmortem examination due to the uncertainty of the suicide motive. The Settikulam Police are said to be conducting further investigations in to the incident.
