The United National Party says that the only reason they were able to avoid the court from issuing an enjoining order preventing the party’s convention was because they had been previously prepared. Had we not been ready for such a petition we would not even be able to have an attorney to represent us, Tissa Attanayake said.
The Colombo District court yesterday (December 10) refused to issue an enjoining order preventing the UNP from holding the annual convention scheduled to take place on December 12.
The petition filed seeking to prevent the UNP from holding its convention was a contract by the government, the General Secretary of the UNP claimed.
Speaking at a press conference at the party headquarters (Sirikotha) today Tissa Attanayake stated that they had not received any prior notice regarding the petition and that it was sudden.
As scheduled the United national party convention will be held tomorrow (December 12) without any interruptions and the main objective of it is to pass the new party constitution which has been approved by the Working Committee, he further added.
From tomorrow onwards the party will be taking a virtuous step forward, the General Secretary emphasized.
Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe who also attended the press briefing stated that only those who have been authorized can participate in the UNP convention. Those without prior consent cannot attend, he said.
