Sajith Premadasa says he believes that yesterday’s special UNP convention was a ‘critical turning point’ in the party’s political history. The reformists and those who supported the democratization process of the party made multifarious sacrifices in order to achieve this end, he said.
We as reformers and movers of democratic change within the party are extremely happy and vibrant about the United National Party’s future prospects, Sajith stated regarding the new constitution of the UNP being approved by a majority at yesterday’s part convention.
He expressed that this simple democratic change within the party has enabled it to ensure that both the grassroots level organizational structure of the party is strengthened and the visionary approach of the party proposals are there to empower the people of Sri Lanka, including the UNP members.
There are a many people who made various sacrifices, fought a number of battles in order to ensure that this democratization process achieves fruition and I’m extremely grateful for all those people, Mr. Premadasa said at a press conference held in Colombo today (December 13).
“While yesterday’s event was a historic, revolutionary and path breaking event, it is vital and important that if we make this event a pivotal aspect in our party’s political history.”
He stated that the structure of the party should be organized in such a manner that they will have a nation wide task force, which is mandated with ensuring the strengthening of the UNP’s grassroots level structure.
“I propose that we setup a cadre of four million people, one hundred from each of the 40,000 villages in Sri Lanka, and also setup a one million force of women and youth, which will altogether formulate a formidable grassroots level organization which will certainly propel our party for future political victories in all future elections” the UNP Parliamentarian expressed.
