Landslide warnings issued to residents of seven districts

Early landslide warnings have been issued to residents of multiple areas in seven districts owing to incessant rains experienced in parts of the island.

Accordingly, landslide warnings issued by the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) will be in effect from 9:00 p.m. today (13) to 9:00 p.m. tomorrow (14).

The NBRO stated that Level-2 (Amber) warnings have been issued to residents of the Doluwa Divisional Secretariat Division (DSD) and surrounding areas of the Kandy district and to residents of the Kegalle Divisional Secretariat Division and surrounding areas of the Kegalle district.

Furthermore Level-1 (Yellow) warnings have been issued to residents of following areas:

Kandy district: Udadumbara, Yatinuwara and Medadumbara Divisional Secretariat Divisions and surrounding areas

Matale district: Naula Divisional Secretariat Division and surrounding areas

Nuwara Eliya district: Hanguranketha Divisional Secretariat Division and surrounding areas

Kegalle district: Yatiyanthota Divisional Secretariat Division and surrounding areas

Rathnapura district: Elapatha, Opanayaka, Kiriella, Weligepola, Kolonna, Kahawatta and Rathnapura Divisional Secretariat Divisions and surrounding areas

Badulla district: Uva Paranagama Divisional Secretariat Division and surrounding areas

Monaragala district: Medagama and Bibile Divisional Secretariat Divisions and surrounding areas

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and Northwestern provinces and in Mannar district today, according to the Department of Meteorology.

Fairly heavy falls of about 75 mm are likely at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern and Uva provinces, the Met Department.

Meanwhile, the general public has been requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
