Six police officers arrested for allegedly assaulting Catholic priest remanded

Six police officers who were arrested for allegedly assaulting a Catholic priest in Gampaha have been remanded until tomorrow (26).

The group of officers Gampaha Division Crimes Investigation Bureau was remanded after being produced before the Gampaha Magistrate’s Court today.

The incident involves a Catholic priest, a resident of Kotadeniyawa, who was admitted to the Negombo General Hospital yesterday (24) after alleging that he had been assaulted.

According to the priest, he was travelling by motorcycle last night to attend a religious service when a team of police officers, reportedly on motorcycles, assaulted him in Udugampola, Gampaha.

In response, a delegation, including Rev. Jude Chrishantha Fernando and Member of Parliament from the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, Kavinda Jayawardena visited Negombo Hospital today to inquire about the priest’s condition.

In relation to the incident, six police officers were taken into custody by the Gampaha Police today.

The group of suspects includes three sergeants and three constables.
