400,000 plastic containers will be distributed from today (February 14) in order to be used for the transportation of vegetables, said Minister of Cooperatives and Internal Trade Johnston Fernando.

He stressed that using plastic containers to transport vegetables will be compulsory from March 01 onwards.

Measures have been taken to purchase these containers via the government and distribute them through economic centers, the Minister conveyed.

The main purpose of switching to plastic vegetable containers has been to lessen the wastage occurring through the transportation of fruits and vegetables.
