Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa today (05) in Parliament that information has been received indicating that another Iranian vessel is near the Port of Colombo within Sri Lanka’s maritime boundary, and that the government must make a clear statement regarding the matter.
Opposition Leader Premadasa speaking in Parliament said the government should also make a special announcement regarding the attack carried out yesterday on the Iranian naval vessel using a torpedo launched from a U.S. submarine.
The Opposition Leader further praised the Sri Lankan Navy personnel for saving the lives of those who were on the Iranian vessel, but said that the government has so far not made a clear diplomatic statement about the actions it intends to take regarding the incident.
He added that a serious situation has arisen that requires attention regarding Sri Lanka’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Premadasa also stated that although the government was aware that a vessel had been destroyed near the country yesterday (04), the fact that Parliament had not been informed obstructs Members of Parliament from fulfilling their constitutional responsibilities.
Meanwhile, the Opposition Leader also said that medical professionals at the Galle National Hospital have requested 40-foot container units to store the bodies of Iranian nationals that have been brought there, and expressed hope that the government will pay attention to this matter.
Premadasa also questioned how the government could be unaware of activities occurring within Sri Lanka’s maritime boundaries, warning that such a situation could pose a threat to national security.
