It has been reported that thirty (30) Sri Lankan migrant workers are currently engaged in a fast unto death in Iraq, demanding the management to pay their 19 months salary arrears.
The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) however states that it cannot directly interfere regarding the issues of the migrant workers in question as they have entered the Middle Eastern country illegally.
We had discontinued sending any Lankans to the country a long time ago due to the prevailing volatile situation in Iraq, chairman of the Bureau Kingsley Ranawaka said.
“These Sri Lankan migrant workers currently engaged in a fast unto death had entered Iraq by illegal means.”
As there is no Sri Lankan embassy or any government official in Iraq, we (the Foreign Employment Bureau) cannot directly intervene in the issue, he further stated.
