Fastening seat belts compulsory from October

The government has decided to make the use of seat belts in vehicles compulsory starting from October 01. Approval has been granted for the concerning legislation already, said Transport Ministry Secretary Dhammika Perera.

Therefore from October 01 it is a must for the driver and front passenger of vehicles, carrying number plates with English letters, to fasten seat belts.

The Motor Traffic Commissioner’s Office has prepared legal regulations pertaining to this and persons violating them will be met with strong legal action, the Secretary warned.
