Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) in the North Western Province have launched a trade union action today against police interference when performing their duties.

President of the Public Health Inspectors’ Association, Upul Rohana said that they are protesting a false allegation made by Kurunegala SSP that the PHIs were directly involved in the illegal cattle trade.

Rohana stated that from today all PHIs in the North Western Province will withdraw from assigned duties under the Animal act with relation to cattle slaughter. He added that if the SSP did not make such a statement he should clarify it and if he did he should tender an apology.

He warned the trade union action will be carried out island-wide if authorities fail to remedy the situation.
