The Ministry of Health is to commence new programme to locally manufacture pharmaceutical drugs necessary for the country. The programme under Japan’s assistance is expected to begin in the coming week, Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena said.

The drug production of the State Pharmaceuticals Corporation (SPC) is to be increased through this measure. The SPC currently manufactures around 50 types of drugs while private establishments manufacture around 40 types of pharmaceutical drugs in the country.

The aim of this move will be to increase this number and locally manufacture drugs for the country, the Minister added.
