November 29, 2011   10:01 am

Deputy Minister of Petroleum Industries Sarana Gunawardana has been suspended from attending Parliament for a period of one week over his behavior during the President’s budget speech.

Earlier today (29) the Speaker ordered Leader of the House Nimal Siripala de Silva to propose a motion preventing Sarana Gunawardena from attending Parliament for one week, Ada Derana Parliament reporter said.

Therefore the motion was proposed by the Leader of the House after which Speaker Chamal Rajapakse imposed the one week suspension on the Deputy Minister.

Several opposition MPs who were holding placards condemning the 2012 budget proposal were attacked by government MPs on November 21 during President Mahinda Rajapakse’s budget speech.

Speaker Chamal Rajapakse on the following day stated that an investigation will be carried out regarding the incident and that those responsible for bringing placards and posters to parliament and creating a tense situation will also be investigated.
