Azath Salley to resign from CMC

Azath Salley says he will resign as Colombo Municipal councilor after making a statement in the council on January 19. The former Deputy Mayor of Colombo told Ada Derana that the reason behind his decision was due to the UPFA government breaking its promises to him.
Mr. Salley, who joined the UPFA in 2010, accuses the Opposition Leader of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC), Milinda Moragoda of awarding the post of Deputy Opposition Leader to Mohamed Mahroof, who incidentally also crossed over to the government from the UNP.
He says that not awarding the position to him, who received the second highest number of preferential votes in the UPFA, is “unjust”.
Salley received 10,350 votes behind UPFA mayoral candidate Milinda Moragoda who received 32,103 votes.
Azath Salley said he will make a special statement before the Colombo Municipal Council on January 19, prior to officially resigning from the post.
He however revealed that he has no intentions of rejoining the United National Party.
