Regain Katchatheevu to restore “lost rights” – TN Governor

Holding that the government was “deeply concerned about the continuing attacks on Tamil Nadu fishermen by Sri Lankan navy,” Governor of Tamil Nadu, K. Rosaiah on Monday said the incidents were repeating despite protests.

“I urge the Government of India to take up this issue strongly with Sri Lanka. All efforts must to be taken to protect the traditional fishing rights of Tamil Nadu fishermen in Palk Bay and ensure their safety and security,” he said in his customary address to the first session of the Tamil Nadu assembly this year.

He reiterated the state government’s “resolve” to regain Katchatheevu, ceded to Sri Lanka in 1974 by India by way of an agreement, so as to restore the fishermen’s “lost rights”.

The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly’s first session for the year began today (Jan 30) with the customary address of Governor K Rosaiah.

The session assumes importance as this is the first after the AIADMK severed links with erstwhile allies - the DMDK and the Left parties after the 2011 Assembly polls. A one-day special session in December 2011 confined itself to the Mullaiperiyar issue.
