President Mahinda Rajapaksa has requested the newly appointed Maldivian President Mohamed Waheed to ensure the safety of former President Muhammad Nasheed, who resigned on Tuesday amidst public protests.
Presidential spokesman Bandula Jayasekara said today that President Mohammed Waheed Hassan had agreed to the request of the Sri Lankan President.
Meanwhile it has been reported that the wife of the ousted president of the Maldives had arrived in Sri Lanka yesterday (Feb. 09).
Mohamed Nasheed resigned following weeks of public protests over his controversial order to arrest a senior judge. He handed over power to Vice President Mohammed Waheed Hassan.
However, Nasheed on Wednesday said that he had been forced out of power at gunpoint, prompting clashes between police and angry supporters.
