President and Japanese Dy. PM visit Upper Kotmale project

President Mahinda Rajapaksa and visiting Japanese Deputy Prime Minister Katsuya Okada inspected the 150-megawatt Upper Kotmale Hydro Power Project today.
Japanese ambassador Nobuhito Hobo, Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka and Deputy Minister Premalal Jayasekara participated in the observation tour.
The Ministry of Power and Energy said 96% of the construction of the hydro power plant has been completed and that 150 megawatts of electricity will be added to the national power grid by June this year.
The power plant project was launched in 2006 with the financial assistance of Yen 37,817 million by the Japanese government. CEB is said to have spent Rs. 8,548 million for the project.
Sri Lanka’s longest tunnel, the 12.9 km long Upper Kotmale tunnel was declared open by President Mahinda Rajapaksa in November 2010.
The Japanese Deputy Prime Minister arrived in Sri Lanka yesterday (May 4) on a two-day state visit and was received by Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa and Deputy External Affairs Minister Neomal Perera at BIA.
Okada’s visit is with regard to improving bi-lateral ties and to witness the progress of several Japanese funded development initiatives.
He is also expected to visit Akkarayan Kulam Tank, Sub Grid Power Station at Anathapuram in Kilinochchi, Dry-fish project in Velanai and Coconut Development Farm in Achchuveli. (AdaDerana)
