The Federation of University Teachers’ Associations (FUTA) today said it is not prepared to accept the invitation of Higher Education Minister S.B. Dissanayake, to report to work from July 30.

President of FUTA Dr. Nirmal Ranjith Devasiri said the strike action will not end until their demands are met.

The Higher Education Minister in a special communique issued yesterday requested striking academics of universities to return to duties from July 30 considering the future of the students.

Dissanayake had said that the strike by FUTA could delay the process of university enrollment of new students and therefore requested all professors and lecturers to report to work from Monday putting aside petty political agendas.

Dr. Devasiri however stated that the communique had made no references to the demands of the academics.

Either the demands should be met or there should be a basis for an agreement regarding the demands, the FUTA President said.
