The Ministry of Co-operatives and Internal Trade says that if any shortage of essential goods occurs or an artificial shortage is created, measures will be taken to import the respective goods.

In a statement issued the ministry stated every necessary measure has been taken to provide consumers with essential goods at low costs and without shortage.

However if a shortage does occur a decision has been taken to import any food items, except for essential food items manufactured locally, it said.

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) is already proceeding to obtain information regarding stocks of essential goods across the island while efforts are being made to control goods prices in the market, the Trade Minister said.

While rejecting accusations raised by the opposition parties that goods prices are being reduced targeting the election, Minister Johnston Fernando states that the government is committed to reduce prices and provide concessions to the masses at every opportunity.
