The United National Party (UNP) today accused the ruling UPFA government of carrying out propaganda activities related to the upcoming election by putting forwards the sacred Kapilavastu relics brought down from India.
The government is attempting to obtain votes from the public by conducting exposition of sacred relics as they do not have an election campaign theme, UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said.
The government which always sold the war, patriotism and other deceptions does not have a message for this year’s election, he charged.
Attanayake pointing out that they have no objection to the exposition of the Kapilavastu Relics in the country, however said “the problem is the sacred relic expositions are only taking place in the provinces where the election is being held.”
He accused the government of “auctioning off” the relics as well as religions for political gains, as its election slogans are now unsuccessful.
The sacred Kapilavastu Buddhist relics which arrived in Sri Lanka, after more than 30 years, on August 19 was exposed at the Manelwaththa Temple, Kelaniya Rajamaha Viharaya, Pellmadulla Rajamaha Viharaya and later at Jayanthi Viharaya, Anuradhapura.
It was reported today that the exposition of the relics will be extended by the Ministry of Buddhasasana and Religious Affairs in order to provide more devotees with the opportunity to pay homage to the sacred relics.
The Kapilavastu Relics which were brought to Kantale Agrabodi Viharaya yesterday from Anuradhapura Jayanthi Viharaya is to be unveiled for public veneration at Gampola, Wariyapola, Matara, Tissamaharama and several other locations.
