The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the North Western Province and the Indian High Commission in Colombo today denied rumors that a stampede had taken place at the exposition of the sacred Kapilavasthu relics in Wariyapola.

It was reported last evening that several persons were hospitalized following an alleged stampede which had occurred during the Sacred Kapilavastu Relics exposition at the Wariyapola Sri Sumangala Pirivena Vihara.

Devotees in large numbers had gathered at the Sri Sumangala Pirivena Vihara to venerate the Sacred Kapilavastu Relics yesterday.

The Sacred Relics which were placed at the Sri Sambuddhatva Jayanthi Vihare at Naranvita in Gampola were brought to the Sri Sumangala Pirivena Vihare yesterday morning.

It was reported that Buddhist devotees stood in long queues running into several kilometers, waiting for their turn to worship the Sacred Relics.
