The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) today said that the process of repairing the Lakvijaya coal power plant in Norochcholai has neared completion and that they intend to recommission the plant tomorrow.

Repairs at the power plant have currently been completed successfully, therefore we intend to recommission it tomorrow evening, the CEB Vice President Anura Vijepala said.

The breakdown at the Chinese-built power station was initially caused due to a malfunction of a turbine, and following its repair a transformer had also malfunctioned.

The CEB stated that the repairs were carried out with the assistance of a team of Chinese engineers.

However,  Mr Vijepala, stated that power cuts in parts of the island will continue tomorrow and the next day as per previous schedule, for 3 hours and 20 minutes.
