Impeachment motion against CJ handed over to Speaker

The impeachment motion against the Chief Justice was handed over to the Speaker by MPs Arundika Fernando, L. Alagiyawanna and Shanth Bandara with the signatures of 117 MPs a short while ago.
Political sources revealed yesterday that members of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) have decided to bring forth an impeachment motion against Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake.
Over 100 MPs have signed this impeachment motion and it is to be presented to the speaker of the Parliament within the days to come.
The MPs decided to bring forth this motion at a party leader’s special meeting yesterday (30).
According to Section 107 of the Constitution, before an impeachment motion is presented to the speaker, atleast a third of the members in the parliament must sign the motion, a third being 75 MPs. It is reported that around 107 MPs have already signed the motion.
Sources state that the motion revolves around the Chief Justice’s “improper behavior” and six other accusations.
The motion was approved by the President at the party leader’s special meeting yesterday where MPs Maithreepala Sirisena, Dinesh Gunawardane, Basil Rajapakse, Susil Premajayantha, Dalla Alahapperuma, Rauff Hakeem, Douglas Dewananda, Dew Gunasekara, Tissa Vitharana, Wimal Weerawansa, Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Patali Champika Ranawaka, Muttu Sivalingam, A. L. M. Athaulla attended the event.
