One lane on Baseline Road from Dematagoda to Borella has been closed due to the prevailing unrest in Welikada Prison, following a special search operation carried out by STF.

Army personnel have been called to assist the Police Special Task Force (STF) to control the tense situation.

Tear gas was fired after inmates at the Welikada Prison pelted stones at the STF personnel following the search operation carried out today.

Several mobile phones were discovered during the operation carried out with the assistance of prison officers, STF Commandant DIG R.W.M.C. Ranawana stated.

He further added that the search operation was carried out according to information received regarding various illegal activities taking place within the Welikada Prison.
