MP Vijitha Herath has been nominated by the Democratic National Alliance (DNA) as its representative for the Parliamentary Select Committee which will probe the charges in the impeachment motion against the Chief Justice.
The ruling UPFA last week nominated Ministers Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, Nimal Siripala de Silva, Susil Premajayantha, Rajitha Senaratne, Wimal Weerawansa, Dilan Perera and Neomal Perera for the 11-member committee.
The Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa, in order to facilitate all political parties in the Select Committee had requested for the appointment of eleven members for the Committee.
As per the Constitution it can be a Committee of a minimum of seven members.
Opposition parties had protested to the Speaker about what they called unfair government representation in the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) appointed to inquire into the Impeachment Motion, containing 14 charges against Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake.
The UNP had called for the government members selected for the PSC to be reduced from seven to six.
UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake had stated that if the opposition is not allowed to appoint five members to the PSC it will then take a decision on whether or not to appoint any members to the committee.
Currently the committee is represented by 7 members from the ruling UPFA government and four opposition members, divided as 2 MPs from the United National Party (UNP) and one each from the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and Democratic National Alliance (DNA).
