First session of impeachment hearing ends; PSC to reconvene on Dec 4

The first session of the impeachment hearing by an 11-member Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC), over alleged financial misconduct by Chief Justice, ended a short while ago. Sources say the PSC will reconvene on December 04.

Dr. Shirani bandaranayake attended parliament today for the start of a process in which she is expected to be impeached over 14 charges of financial and official misconduct.

Bandaranayake left the Supreme Court complex earlier today and drove to the parliament accompanied by a lawyer.

The lawmakers had decided to press ahead with the hearing despite a non-binding Supreme Court order yesterday for parliament to delay while legal challenges to the impeachment process are heard.

Bandaranayake, whose husband was also charged recently with corruption while holding a political appointment as the head of a state-owned bank, has denied the financial wrongdoing alleged in the impeachment.
