The price of a litre of petrol (90 octane) has been increased by Rs.10 from today (December 15) taking the price up to Rs. 159 per litre, the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation stated.

The price of petrol was increased by 6.7 percent in order to prevent the CPC from suffering further losses, an official said.

The state-run firm’s losses stood at 75 billion rupees ($583.43 million) at the end of October because of the failure to pass the world market oil price on to consumers, the CPC’s managing director Susantha Silva had told Reuters.
