The International Cricket Council informs that there is no objection to MP Thilanga Sumathipala contesting the upcoming Sri Lanka Cricket election, says the former SLC president’s group.

Various parties had expressed concern over Sumathipala’s candidacy for the position of SLC president and raised questions regarding his eligibility for the post while certain sports had claimed it was in contravention to the sports act and ICC regulations.

The Chairman of the ICC has informed Thilanga Sumathipala that there is no legal obstacle to him contesting next month’s election, said President of Kurunegala SC Irwin Jayawardena, who is contesting for the post of Vice Treasurer of SLC from Thilanga’s camp.

Sumathipala has been SLC president three times from 1997 to 2004. He also contested for the position last year, but withdrew from the race, allowing Upali Dharmadasa to win the election uncontested.
