The Urban Development Authority (UDA) today rejected accusations that people living in Apple Watta, Slave Island are being forcibly evicted from their homes.

UDA chairman Nimal Perera stated that the people living in shanties in Appple Watta have been temporarily removed from the location, as per their wishes, in order to construct flats for them.

Opposition Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe had recently claimed that people in Colombo are being forcibly evicted from their homes for the purpose of building parking lots.

There are 568 shanties in Appla Watta, houses will be built and every one of them will be resettle in that exact location, Nimal Perera said at a press conference today.

He accused the Opposition Leader of making “false statements,” fearing that he will lose his voter base once shanty dwellers are provided with houses.

The UDA chairman completely refuted the accusations made by Mr Wickramasinghe that people are being chased away from Colombo.
