President Mahinda Rajapaksa today said that steps will be taken to increase the speed limit for vehicles in the country’s roads and that pavements will be compulsory in all roads being built.

People who have imported new vehicles are grateful for building roads, however complain that they are stopped by the police each step of the way, he said at a ceremony in Galgamuwa after declaring open the Padeniya-Anuradhapura road.

The reason for this is because speed limits are still set up by laws created for the old 8-feet road, the President said, adding, that he believes the speed limits should be revised to suite the country’s new roads.

He further said that roads are built for vehicles to travel and not for pedestrians and that constructing pavements will be compulsory in all roads paved in the future.
