Facing stiff opposition from the masses, the government had to release Azath Salley, who was treated as a “terrorist” until yesterday, Opposition Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe said today.

The former CMC member and National Unity Alliance General Secretary, who was receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital under CID custody, was released today and transferred to a private hospital in Colombo.

Speaking to reporters after visiting Salley in hospital, Wickramasinghe stated that the government is using the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) suppress politicians and that if everyone in the opposition joins forces, such oppressive procedures of the government can be defeated.

UNG General Secretary Tissa Attanayake, who also visited Salley at hospital, said that the arrest was purely “revenge.” When questioned regarding Azath Salley asking forgiveness from the President, Attanayake said there is no fault in doing so.
