May 22, 2013   09:15 am

The Supreme Court has taken up the fundamental rights petition put forward by the residents of Maligawatta’s Apple Watta regarding their evictions and the temporary housing they have been granted until their new homes are built.

The petition was put forward by the residents of 25 homes in Aplle Watta.

The petition contains grievances regarding the temporary lodging that they have been provided and the method of distribution of new homes which the residents claim is unacceptable.

The respondents for the case include the Chairman, Director General and Assistant Director of the Urban Development Authority, the Defence Secretary, Army Commander and the Inspector General of Police.

The petition will be taken up again on June 25 while the respondents have been given notice to appear before court on the day.
