Urgent Bill regarding Provincial Councils

Urgent Bill regarding Provincial Councils

June 4, 2013   11:31 pm

A decision was taken today (June 4) at the Government party leaders meeting chaired by President Mahinda Rajapaksa to make provisions to prevent the amalgamation of Provincial Councils, sources stated.

Furthermore, a decision was also taken to remove provisions ensuring that any new regulations concerning Provincial Councils must be passed by all the Provincial Councils. Instead the bill will only have to be passed in a majority of Provincial Councils.

Government sources stated that the amendments to the powers of the Provincial Councils will be presented to cabinet as an urgent bill on June 6.
