Convener of the Inter University Bhikku Union, Kimbullawe Chandrananda Thero was arrested by the Mirihana police for not heeding summons issued by the court regarding several cases.

Police stated that he will be presented to the Nugegoda Magistrate court tomorrow (July 10).

The Inter University Students Federation charged that Chandrananda thero was arrested on false charges brought forward by the Sri Jayawardenapura University administration due to the Thero’s involvement in organizing a protest march against the grenade attack on a student memorial in the university one and a half years ago.

The federation also stated that he was requested to make a statement to the police who then proceeded to arrest him. The IUSF also charged that this was another act of suppression carried out by the university on its students.

Meanwhile, IUSF convener Sanjeewa Bandara was further remanded until July 12 by the Nugegoda Magsitrate and the additional District Court Judge Ajith M. Masingha.

Police told courts today that Bandara was arrested for organizing a protest on June 26 while ignoring orders issued by the police.

Mirihana police also told court that they are examining video footage in order to arrest 14 other suspects regarding this case.
