Arrest warrant issued for Vaas Gunawardena’s son

The Kaduwela Magistrate today issued a warrant for the arrest of Ravindu Gunawardena, son of former DIG Vaas Gunawardena, for not appearing before the court on a student assault case.

The arrest warrant was issued after Ravindu, a suspect in the assault of Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) student Nipuna Dhanushka Ramanayake, failed to appear at court when the case was taken up today.

It is alleged that the student was abducted at gunpoint in August 2009 and assaulted for several hours, over a personal feud, by Ravindu and a group of police officers.

Ravindu was a student at the same institution when the assault had taken place while his father was then a Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP).

The case was postponed to November 29 by the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court, Ada Derana reporter said.

Ravindu has also been named as a suspect in the murder of Bambalapitiya-based businessman Mohamed Siyam, over which former DIG Vaas Gunawardena has been arrested.
The CID had recently informed the Colombo Magistrate’s Court that he too should be arrested in connection to the murder.
