VIDEO: Provincial Council election to cost Rs.1,500 million

Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya says that the upcoming election for the Northern, North Western and Central provincial councils is expected to cost around Rs 1,500 million with the recent hikes in electricity and fuel prices.
He further stated any and all election propaganda activities will be prohibited in the vicinity of schools during the period of examinations, being held from August 05 to 31.
Nominations will be accepted from July 25 until 12 noon on August 01 while applications for Postal Votes will be accepted until 12 noon on August 02, he said, addressing a press conference at the Elections Secretariat in Colombo today.
The Elections Chief also stated that the voting list approved on December 31, 2012 will be valid for the election and that the highest number of voters have registered from Kurunegala.
Deshapriya stated that the Northern Provincial Council election will be held for the first time, in a peaceful environment following the end of the war.
He also said that no final decision has been taken on granting permission to foreign election observers.
