UNP Western Provincial Council member Mujibur Rahman today inquired why Ministers Wimal Weerawansa and Champika Ranawaka have not given up their portfolios and left the government, despite promising to do so if the government does not repeal the 13th Amendment and cancel election in the North.
The government has already started calling for nominations for the Central, North Western and Northern Provincial Councils and the date have been set for the polls but those ministers are silent now, he said.
He also inquired as to where the “patriots” who vowed to commit self immolation if the Provincial Council election is held according to the 13th Amendment, which is part of the Indo-Sri Lanka Accord of 1987.
Pointing out that protest marches were recently held against mosques, beef stalls and the Burqa worn by Muslim women, Mr Rahman inquire where those patriots were when India’s National Security Advisor Shivshankar Menon came and gave Sri Lanka a “knock on the head” warning not to dilute the 13th Amendment.
“A demonstration at least asking Shivshankar Menon to leave the country was not held,” he said.
He accused government politicians of always stirring racial hatred in order to deceive the masses.
The Provincial Councilor charged that the government has today betrayed the country’s sovereignty and independence to India and that Sri Lanka has lost its respect to such an extent that the Central Government of India has to dictate conditions on the 13th Amendment.
“The government has betrayed us to India,” he alleged.
