Both External Affairs Minister G.L. Peiris and the Leader of the Opposition Ranil Wickramasinghe are expected to engage in parallel visits to New Delhi next week to hold talks with Indian leaders.

Peiris will be meeting Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday to invite him to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) to be held in Colombo between November 15 and 17.

Wickramasinghe, who would be on a private visit to India, had requested a meeting with Indian leaders on August 21 or 22 when he proposed to be in New Delhi.

He will leave on Monday (August 19) for the three-day visit.

It is learnt that he might meet Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid, though nothing has been finalised yet, Indian media reported.

The visits are critical in view of the controversy over the Sri Lankan government’s bid to prune or do away with the 13th Amendment.
