The United National Party today accused UPFA parliamentarian Arundika Fernando of engaging in major acts of violence and intimidation within the Wennappuwa electoral division in Puttalam District on election day.

As per information received, MP Arundika Fernando accompanied by gang of around 50 “armed thugs” is roaming throughout the electorate since 1.30am today (21), forcefully entering the residences of opposition activists, threatening them with guns and carrying out assaults, MP Tissa Attanayake said.

At one point he had made some supporters of the UNP kneel on the ground and brutally assaulted them, the UNP General Secretary said in a statement, adding, “Arundika Fernando and his thugs visited polling stations since morning threatening and chasing away opposition supporters.”

Attanayake stated that complaints have been lodged with the Police Stations in the area, the DIG in charge of elections and foreign election monitors regarding the situation.
