Former judge C.V. Vigneswaran has been officially elected as the Chief Minister of the Northern Province by the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), which secured a landslide victory in the provincial polls on Sunday.
Vigneswaran, who obtained the highest preference votes in the Jaffna District with a total of 132,255 votes, was named unanimously by the 28 TNA candidates who were elected for the Northern Provincial Council during a special meeting today.
All TNA parliamentarians participated in the gathering held at a private hotel in Jaffna today (23).
The Tamil National Alliance, which is registered as Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK), won a landslide victory Sunday in landmark elections in the battle-scarred North, securing 30 out of 38 seats in polls for the provincial council in the former war zone.
The TNA swept all five districts in the election for the Northern Provincial Council, the first for 26 years.
Canagasabapathy Viswalingam Vigneswaran, a retired Supreme Court Judge, was nominated as the Chief Ministerial candidate for the Northern Provincial Council polls in July.
